Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - NPR Tiny Desk Concert
There’s something very telling about Ben Haggerty’s (aka Macklemore’s) choice to open his NPR Tiny Desk concert with “Same Love” over either of his Top-5 radio hits (“Thrift Shop” and “Can’t Hold Us”).
But it actually very much makes sense. Macklemore is so much more than thrift shopping and ESPN highlight reel-ready party anthems. He has important shit to say. And, thankfully, it seems he’s determined to use his newly anointed pulpit atop the Top 40 charts to preach something worth listening to.
While the Yeezys and Waynes are rapping about everything but social issues, Macklemore is happily filling that void, content to treat his fans to a substantive discussion about things that actually concern them.
Will “Same Love” make a dent in the same-sex marriage debate that is quickly going down as our generation’s stain we want so badly to remove before history writes us off?
Probably not. It is just a song after all. But, as Macklemore says, that’s a damn good place to start.
And that song, potentially, is one equality-focused song on the radio that we didn’t have six months ago. And who’s to say what that kind of exposure to tolerance can breed?
And so, Jennifer Lawrence officially became the most delightful, funny, and likeable actress in Hollywodd.
I love her. I think she’s great. But there’s a lack of filter between her brain and her mouth. Right now it’s cute, disarming even. And it’s probably not an affectation; she’s probably just legitimately in awe of her success and career trajectory.
But it’s either going to get really old really fast or it’s going to get her in trouble one day. Possibly both.
Not hating, just pointing it out.
Seeing Macklemore “make it” is so awesome. First unsigned artist since Lisa Loeb to reach Billboard #1. Performing late night on the regular.
Ginger just reminded me this song existed. Can we please take a moment out of our day to jam out to this song once more?
Thanks, Dick’s Sporting Goods. The man-ovaries literally just recovered from the Wreck-It Ralph incident, and then you throw this at me. Let’s run down the checklist:
Good music? Check
Brothers being awesome together? Check
Sentimentality in the little things? Check
Damn you, Dick’s Sporting Goods. Damn you.
Ben Sollee - “Bible Belt”
I’m pretty sure I’ve blogged this video before, but it needs to be blogged again. Watch it if you love Ben Sollee. Watch it if you love good music. Watch it if you think dance is a language and not just something you do with your arms and legs. Watch it if you think love is a real thing and not an idea.
