liligolightly replied to your post: The popification of THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER kind of makes me want to vomit in my sleep.
I didn’t read it as a youth because the concept depressed me even then, and the trailer for the movie just made me even sadder. Is it too late in my life to read it?
My opinion on THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER is that it’s a great book to read at a certain point in your life — that 13-to-16 years old timeframe — when you can best relate to the book’s thematic elements and not think, “God, this is so contrived.”
If you’re the kind of person that can be nostalgic without 20/20 hindsight, you’ll probably enjoy PERKS now. But if you look back on your high school years with a heightened sense of realism and skepticism, most of the book’s content will make you roll your eyes, kind of like watching an overwrought version of “I ♥ the ’90s.”
